The Chitwan National Park in Nepal is situated in south-central Nepal. It covers 952.63 sq. km. in the subtropical lowlands of the inner Terai. The Tikauli forest area, extending from the Rapti River to the foothills of the Mahabharat, spans 175 sq km.

The area has a rich conservation history. In 1959, the late King Mahendra declared it Mahendra Mriga Kunj (Mahendra Deer Park). Later, in 1963, the area towards the south of the Rapti River was designated as a rhinoceros sanctuary, highlighting its importance for wildlife protection. Due to its unique ecosystems, the area was officially declared Nepal’s first national park in 1973. In recognition of its global significance, UNESCO listed Chitwan National Park as a World Heritage Site in 1984.

In 1996, a 766.1 sq. km buffer zone around the park was created to support conservation and community development. This zone includes forests, private lands, and farms. The park and the local people jointly initiate community development activities and manage natural resources in the buffer zone. The government provides 30-50% of the park’s income for community development and resource management.

Biodiversity

Chitwan National Park is home to more than 700 species of wildlife, including:

• 68 species of mammals
• Over 546 species of birds
• 55 species of amphibians and reptiles
• Around 120 species of fish

Some of the endangered fauna found in the park are: One-horned rhinoceros, Gaur, Bison, Royal Bengal tiger, Wild elephant, Four-horned antelope, Pangolin, Golden monitor lizard, Python, Bengal florican, Lesser florican, Giant hornbill, Black stork, White stork, etc. Park also has the highest population of sloth bears, with around 200-250 of them.
